Heritage Park on the Powerhouse Road

Victoria has the unique distinction of being the only place in Newfoundland and Labrador that once accommodated a Prison of War Camp. The internment camp was built in the early 1940’s by the British to hold German prisoners, but the camp never opened or held a prisoner. It is said that as a condition of the United States entering the War in 1942, they didn’t want any prisoners on Newfoundland soil. At the time the United States had three Forces bases on the island and felt that if any prisoners were held here, the Germans would have a reason to bomb the Island. The Heritage Park is located on this site. It has replicas of a Saltbox House, General Store, Post Office, Church, Railroad Station and many other buildings, and of course a Newfoundland Pony and Billygoats.
